LEARNING CURVE Winter/Spring 2010 VISUAL ART & WRITING WORKSHOPS
Mixed Media Studio
Further develop your mastery of methods for combining materials and learn techniques for developing texture, density, transparency and color layering. Designed to encourage individual goals and projects, this open studio class will include guided exercises, group and individual critiques and most importantly, provide consistent time to create a series or single explorations with acrylic paint, gesso drawing, chalk and oil pastels and oil paint stick on paper and canvas. Students may work from still life provided or on individual projects. The class is open to students at a variety of levels, however some painting experience is preferred. Each section is limited to 9 students.
Session A:
When: Tuesdays, Jan 19 – Mar 16, Morning Section: 9:00am-noon; Afternoon Section: 1:00-4:00pm

When: Tuesdays, Mar 23 – May 18, Morning Section: 9:00am-noon; Afternoon Section: 1:00-4:00pm

Where: St. Philip’s in the Hills (Palo Verde Room)
Instructor: Cynthia Miller, M.F.A., completed her undergraduate work in fine arts at the San Francisco Art Institute and her graduate work at the University of Arizona. Her innovative mixed media work can be seen at the Tucson International Airport and the Tucson Museum of Art. Her illustrations appear in Southwest Kitchen Garden by Kim Nelson, published by Rio Nuevo Press.
Materials List
A Strathmore pad of Drawing Paper, 80 lb. ,18"x 24"
Acrylic paints (Golden brand or Liquitex):
Naphthol Crimson, medium, Phthalo Blue, Hansa or Azo Yellow, Medium and White Gesso
Chalk pastels, an inexpensive set or purchase singly
Oil Pastels, an inexpensive set or purchased singly
Oil Paint sticks, SHIVA brand, only, please, may be bought at Sarnoff or Posner's on Park south of Speedway only:
White, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Green, Yellow Ochre, Phthalo Blue, other colors as you prefer
Brushes: Acrylic brushes, medium width, a round and a flat, also an inexpensive 2" bristle brush from Ace hardware,
other brushes as you wish
Pencil, eraser, exacto knife, styrofoam plate for palettes, water can (plastic, not glass) paper towels
Optional: an apron
