THE LEARNING CURVE Winter/Spring 2010 VISUAL ART & WRITING WORKSHOPS

Nature Drawing and Watercolor Painting with Katie Iverson

Go from drawing stick figures to creating accurate and gestural illustrations of plant life in this two-part series with artist/biologist Katie Iverson. Beginners and artists wanting to hone their drawing and painting skills will benefit from individual attention and guided practice in an encouraging classroom environment. Students may sign up for either one or both classes. You do not need prior experience.

Nature Drawing
Learn basic drawing skills to illustrate living beings that won’t move and won’t bite: plants! Each class will involve instruction and hands-on work, including making use of line, form and shading. By lesson four, students will be drawing life-like plants. Instructor will provide materials for the first day and will discuss additional materials needed (approximately $8-20). During the third class meeting, students will delve into rules for good composition, which is vital information for sketchers, painters and even photographers. By class decision – and weather permitting, the fourth session may be held outside.

When: Wednesdays, Jan 27 – Feb 17, 1:00–4:00pm
Where: Crizmac Art and Cultural Marketplace, 1642 N. Alvernon Way
Cost: $95 (4 sessions)

Watercolor
Learn basic watercolor painting skills of mixing colors, creating the illusion of form and space, emphasizing light and shadow, and creating textures. Students will learn tricks to correct mistakes. By the last session, participants will have a simple completed painting. Examples of artwork in different styles will be presented. Instructor will provide the materials for first day and discuss additional materials needed ($20-45). Emphasis is on learning to interpret and record in color what is being observed – and having fun doing it!

When: Wednesdays, Mar 10 - Apr 14, 1:00–4:00pm
Where: Crizmac Art and Cultural Marketplace, 1642 N. Alvernon Way
Cost: $145 (6 sessions)
