Diagnosing Literary Legends

A new view of our favorite characters from storybooks to Broadway.

You won’t want to miss this discipline “merger”, as Dr. Judith Rodman, a theater scholar, psychology professor and psychotherapy practitioner, combines her talents to explore the psyches and provide diagnoses of some of your favorite characters.  Learn about the criteria used by professionals as you examine troubled literary figures and investigate the personalities and motivations of such characters as the Mean Queen from Snow White and Willie Loman in Death of a Salesman.
Week 1: An overview of the DSM IV the diagnostic manual used by mental health professionals as they assess patients/clients, en route to arriving at a diagnosis. (The DSM IV comes in an abridged paperback form and would be very helpful in this class.)
Week 2: We’ll examine the characters you read about with your children or grandchildren in Snow White and the Wizard of Oz and explore the addictive behaviors of characters in well-known dramas and musicals.
Week 3: We’ll examine characters from plays and musicals including Oklahoma, Death of a Salesman, The Odd Couple, Mr. Roberts, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and more.
When: Mondays, Feb 15 - Mar 1, 1:00-3:00pm
Where: The Windmill Inn, 4250 N. Campbell Ave.
Cost: $69 (3 sessions)
