The Art of Innovation: Abstract Artists in America
American ingenuity made an indelible mark on the art world with the advent of abstraction. Join Barbara Churchill for a look at the uniquely American twist on this genre tracing its evolution from the early work of J.M.Whistler, Marsden Hartley and Man Ray to the painters of the New York School and the significant contributions of women.
Week 1: The Beginning – Uncovering the roots
J.M. Whistler, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and others lead the way.
Week 2: The New York School
Jackson Pollack, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Flanz Kline and Willem De Kooning, Lee Krasner and Joan Mitchell rocked the art world at home and abroad.

Instructor: Barbara Churchill, M.A., completed her master’s degree in art history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her research skills have been an asset to the University of Arizona Museum of Art, and she has been a frequent lecturer at the Tucson Museum of Art, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Foothills Community Foundation in Scottsdale, AZ.
