The Mongols
Kublai Khan and Marco Polo

Ghengis Khan’s conquests included China, and it was his grandson Kublai Khan  who founded the Yuan Dynasty and moved China’s capital to Beijing. The dynasty lasted only a century, but what a century it was! With stunning images and videos we will see how Kublai Khan reunited China, reopened the trade routes, hosted Marco Polo, built Xanadu and ended up being more Chinese than the Chinese themselves.

Week 1: The Mongol conquest of China
Week 2: Chinese architecture & the construction of Beijing
Week 3: Marco Polo at the Court of Kublai Khan
Week 4: Chinese art, literature and theatre - the legacy of Kublai Khan.
