A New Light on Biblical Women

Old Testament and Archaeology

The Old Testament is filled with many different stories about women, but no single story provides us with a complete picture of women’s lives in biblical times.  Rather, we learn bits and pieces – something about mothers, wives, female prophets, female victims of violence, and more.  No biblical woman is meant to be typical – but by looking at many biblical women, it is possible to more fully describe all women’s lives.  Archaeology provides a second resource, one that allows us to go beyond the text and examine day-to-day life in Iron Age Israel.  It helps us set biblical stories into their historic contexts.  This class will explore the lives of biblical women by taking advantage of the myriad resources available to us – and by asking class participants to share their own reflections on this fascinating world.  Bring a Bible (Old Testament) to class each week.
