Rubens and Rembrandt

Contrasts in Sensual Theatricality and Spiritual Intensity

Rubens and Rembrandt are considered two of the giants of the Baroque, creating works of great spiritual power. Yet two artists could not have been more different. Through an examination on their works of art we will seek to understand the ebullience of Rubens and the introspection of Rembrandt. We will examine not only what it meant to them and those around them, but also how their works can still be so instructive and powerful today.

Week 1: Rubens and the Triumph of Sensualism and Seduction — color, light and the manipulation of the classical tradition.

Week 2: Rubens, the Diplomat and Creator of Monarchial Image — The Marie de Medici Cycle — or what to do with such a problematic patron?

Week 3: Rembrandt as the Dutch Rubens: The Triumph of Success, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp — or Pride Goeth Before a Fall.

Week 4: Absolute Artistic Triumph and Dramatic Personal Failure — Rembrandt and the Complete Inability to Manage a Career. “The Night Watch” and after.

Week 5: Rubens and Rembrandt, a comparison in contrasts, but a synthesis of truth. The psychology of faith and the power of visual expressions — denial and acceptance as found in the Return of the Prodigal Son.
