This three lecture course will examine a selection of artists who represent major trends in eighteenth-century Art. First we will focus on the French painters Jean-François Boucher who was associated with Madame de Pompadour and Louis XV, and Jacques Louis David who became the preeminent painter of the French Revolution. We will then move to England to explore the comic art of William Hogarth and the portrait traditions of Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. As we complete the series we will explore the grand tour and Neoclassicism in Rome, and the Venetian view painter Canaletto and Pietro Longhi, a painter of Venetian aristocratic life.
