Photography, a scientific invention of the mid-19th century, initially conformed to the aesthetic that prevailed in painting, but by the turn of the century evolved into a fully autonomous aesthetic. Individually made by hand from negatives in the darkroom, the bold graphic qualities of the modern black and white photographic print took the elements of form, line and texture to generate a new art form, “The Visual Language of the 20th Century.” Revisit famous images by legendary photographers and discover hidden gems by a host of lesser-known players. Hear from artists, collectors, curators and fine art photography dealers in four classroom sessions plus a field trip to the UA Center for Creative Photography.

Session 1: The Eye of Nature, The Photo-Secession, The New Objectivity

Session 2: Dada, Surrealism, Abstraction, Documentation and The Golden Age of Photojournalism

Session 3: Ansel Adams and Group f/64, Straight Photography, Street Photography, Fashion and Fame

Session 4: The Dusseldorf School, The Pictures Generation

Session 5: Feb. 9 Prints from the collection, Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona
