As Shown Through Native American Basketry and Weavings

Join noted lecturer, appraiser and author Terry DeWald for an insider’s view of the customs and beliefs that define the Native American cultures represented in Arizona. His years of frequent interaction with Native American communities have resulted in long-time friendships and rare opportunities for first-hand knowledge. As you gain new understanding of these traditions, you’ll also enjoy extraordinary examples of indigenous handmade objects, such as the Apache Burden Basket, the Navajo Wedding Basket, and The Tohono O’odham Burden Basket, California Metaphysical and Gambling Baskets as well as acorn gathering and cooking bowls, together with an illustrated discussion of allegorical designs in art including turtle baskets, frets, squash blossoms, coyote tracks, lightning, clouds, effigies, and more.

Week 1: Customs and Blessings: Medicine Men, Native Births, The Spider Woman Blessing of the Navajo infant girls from the Medicine Man, various Native American blessings centering around snake dances and more with examples of related art and artifacts presented through basketry.

Week 2: Ceremonies: Funerals and Healings, with many personal reflections witnessed over the last 40 years. Moreover, the spiritual interpretations of the Navajo Sandpaintings, the Yeis, the Yei-Be-Chai, Mother Earth-Father Sky, Coyote Stealing Fire, The Whirling Logs, Skinwalkers….with again many hands-on examples presented through Navajo weavings.
