The triumph and chaos of romanticism.
Rococo Europe was a construct of perfect beauty and an idyllic dream, but in many ways a complete delusion. Underneath all those fluffy clouds and lovesick cupids were some very harsh realities. Beginning with the nascent Industrial revolution and then the violent French Revolution followed by the devastating Napoleonic wars. Europe seemed on the brink of disaster or triumph. But which? This violence and instability allowed for the exploration of intense and passionate emotion, resulting in what we call Romanticism. Examining artists such as David, Gericault and Delacroix, as well as Turner and Constable, we will investigate and unpack what it means to be romantic. But one cannot look at painting alone, for composers such as Beethoven, Berlioz and Chopin provided the dramatic underscoring to illuminate this remarkable period.
