Valentine’s Day—the epitome of romantic love, which many view as the definition of Love. But not always. In ancient Mediterranean cultures of 2500-4000 years ago, the goddesses of Love more validly represent not romantic love, but the passions of eroticism. This lecture will explore these ancient concepts of love through the figure of the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Her rituals, divine identity, and myths reveal major points in ancient concepts of love, and she is the mediator between the earlier Near Eastern goddesses of fertility and the later Roman goddess of love, Venus. Thus our examination of Aphrodite will open a whole spectrum of views about ancient concepts of love cross-culturally and temporally. And it may prompt us to consider what relation, if any, the ancient ideas have to our modern perceptions of that awesome quality—Love.
