Glorious Sights & Magnificent Sounds

Art and music have always been integrally connected to Christmas. Now when we think of Christmas we immediately conjure up ideas of a Charles Dicken’s scene filled with trees, presents, travel, nutcrackers, endless parties and Christmas punch. Using images, music and multimedia we will briefly look at a Renaissance Christmas at the Court of the Medici, a Baroque Christmas in the Amsterdam of Rembrandt, an 18th-century Christmas at the Versailles of Louis XV, before ending up back again at Victorian England. As we view Michelangelo, Rubens, Rembrandt, and the Palace of Versailles and listen to Praetorius, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Lully, Bach, Rameau, Hayden and Mozart, we will see the glory of image and sound that Dickens really wanted to celebrate.
