Writers of the Jazz Age

Vanity Fair was founded in 1859 as a comic weekly and then another version of the magazine was edited by the popular comic author Artemus Ward in the 1860’s. This version carried literary works by William Dean Howells and other major writers of the era. Condé Nast bought Vanity Fair in 1913, and under Frank Crowninshield, edited it from 1914 until 1935. During this period, Vanity Fair, the most sophisticated literary magazine of the day, published the most talented authors on the literary scene during the Jazz Age. Vanity Fair suffered severely during the Great Depression and by 1935-36, the publication was absorbed by Vogue, also owned by Condé Nast, and became primarily focused on women’s fashion. By 1983, Vanity Fair was resurrected as a sophisticated collection of contemporary literature, art and society. Finally, in the 1990’s, it became a popular monthly edited by Tina Brown, with a focus on literature, film, style, finance and numerous other human interest non-fiction articles.

In celebrating the 100th anniversary (1913-2013) of Vanity Fair, Graydon Carter, its editor since 1992, has edited a fascinating literary anthology entitled Bohemians, Bootleggers, Flappers & Swells: The Best Of Early Vanity Fair (1910-1940). Publishers Weekly praises the collection by stating,

“Fantastic….This volume epitomizes the idea of modernity in American cultural life before the Second World War.”
