Like the mermaid, a creature of two worlds, mixing the genres of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction offers writers inventive new ways to explore ideas, emotions, and experiences. Blurring the edges of genres offers writers multiple forms of communication as they dive like the mermaid into mysterious depths. With many examples, approaches will include:
- Prose poetry
- Text and image combinations
- Epistolary forms
- Ekphrasis
- Collage
- Memoir/fiction blends
- Autofiction
- Essay/story blends
- Résumé, recipe, footnotes, annotations, documents, diaries, lists, fragments, text messages, emails, and other odd inclusions
