From paella to Picasso, bullfighting to Basque country, the history and culture of Spain may conjure easy associations. But, as the former seat of the vast Habsburg Empire, long the site of tumultuous political conditions and colonial histories, and home of literary greats Cervantes and Garcia Lorca, Spain is heir to a rich and complex past.

Take a closer look at Spanish Art from the late 16th Century to the beginning of the 19thCentury.  Celebrated names such as El Greco and Velasquez, and perhaps lesser-known artists such as Cotan and Murillo (but also by default Titian and Rubens), will provide the rich cultural background that will allow us to investigate the turbulent but remarkable rise and fall of Monarchial Spain. Then there is, of course, Goya.  These lectures will examine the extraordinary developments beginning with a highly indigenous artistic tradition grafted onto exterior influences to the Golden Age of Spanish Baroque and finally the twilight of Spanish Art.
