Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt

Explore the history of the 19th century Romanticism through the music of Chopin, Schumann and Liszt. When we say “romantic piano” – we usually associate it with Chopin and his poetic Nocturnes and Ballades, Liszt and his “Dreams of Love” and Transcendental Etudes, and phantasmagoric images of Schumann’s “Carnival.” These pieces, representing the Golden Age of piano literature, inspire us to the visions of higher realms of poetry and music.

Join piano virtuoso Alex Tentser for an intriguing combination of lecture and sparkling piano performance as you discuss

  • The origins of the “character pieces”, such as Nocturnes, Preludes, Ballades, Impromptus
  • The foundation of the modern piano technique in piano music of Chopin and Liszt
  • Poetic, philosophical and spiritual influences on the music of the Romantic artists
  • The history of piano virtuosity, contests, different interpretations of the classical works, and modern reassessment of piano playing
