How the Medici family created the Renaissance in art and music and conquered the world
For nearly three centuries the name Medici was associated with cultural achievement, economic acuity and masterful political savvy. From Cosimo de’ Medici and Donatello and Brunelleschi to Lorenzo the Magnificent with Ghirlandaio and Botticelli, to Leo X and Raphael, to Clement VII and Michelangelo, the Medici cultivated and supported the giants of the Renaissance.
The family that started out as simple citizens of the Florentine Republic ended up as Dukes and absolute rulers over the Duchy of Florence and from this their influence spread throughout Europe particularly with Catherine de’ Medici and Marie de’ Medici in France. By patronizing the cultural developments of the day, the Medici successfully used art and music to glorify their rise (and frequently soften their fall) and guarantee their historical legacy.
