Explore the short stories of one of the most famous writers of the 19th century: Charles Dickens. Although Dickens is mainly remembered for his iconic novels (Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, etc.), he wrote hundreds of short stories. Dickens is famous for his humor, satire, and precise observations of characters and society. Beginning with his earliest sketches in periodicals through his extraordinary fame with the Pickwick Papers and his Christmas stories, we will read and discuss a sampling of his works. Included in the course will be glimpses of The Rogue Theatre’s upcoming production of Great Expectations.
“There are very few moments in a man’s existence when he experiences so much ludicrous distress, or meets with so little charitable commiseration, as when he is in pursuit of his own hat.”
– Charles Dickens, The Pickwick Papers
