Literature of the U.S. Presidents

Embark on a literary and historical journey of American ideals, values, humanity, religion, culture, politics, and war as seen through the literature of our presidents.

Ulysses S. Grant’s favorite author was Edward Bulwer-Lytton, English novelist and playwright, who in 1839 penned the words, “The pen is mightier than the sword,” a quote that has been used by many presidents over the years.

Join Dr. Bill Fry for a survey of the literary legacy of our presidents from George Washington to Joe Biden, including the six who were published before becoming president, the favorite authors of many of the presidents, and the speeches and documents that shaped our democracy from our founding fathers forward. Finally, we will take a deeper look into works by Lincoln, Grant’s Memoirs, Kennedy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Profiles in Courage (1956) and Obama’s Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance (1995), a New York Times #1 best seller when it was reissued in 2004.
