Poetry is all around us these days. The National Endowment for the Arts reports a rise in poetry reading in recent years as a result of projects across the country designed to place poetry in public spaces. We’ll discuss the relevance of the national poet laureate position and consider the impact of poets who have been selected, such as Rita Dove, W.S. Merwin, Billy Collins, Juan Felipe Herrera and Joy Harjo our current Poet Laureate. With one of the largest print/digital collections of contemporary poetry in America, the University of Arizona Poetry Center is a living archive and a landmark home for poetry in the American Southwest.
