Poetry for Lunch

A visit to the University of Arizona Poetry Center

Right off Speedway Blvd., at the corner of Helen and Cherry streets lies a hidden gem…The University of Arizona Poetry Center. It is an award-winning building that holds one of the most extensive poetry collections in the nation. It grew from a modest cottage holding a few books to an international destination for the study of poetry. It was at the original poetry center that Stewart Udall asked Robert Frost to read at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration.

The class will meet at the Poetry Center and be greeted by Tyler Meier, the current director. We will tour the Center which features the library collection, the Odeum, the Dorothy Rubel Humanities Center Room, the Poet’s Cottage, the Children’s Corner and the Mary Dearing Lewis Garden. There will be a special tour of the Rare Book Room which is normally not open to the public. The class will discuss a packet of poems that includes poets and their work from the Spring 2016 Reading Series which includes Terrance Hayes, Kimiko Hahn, David Baker and Khadijah Queen. (You may view the complete series which is free and open to the public at poetry.arizona.edu)

Our visit will conclude with lunch in the garden and time to enjoy the company of fellow students.
