Immerse yourself in the glorious piano music known as the “golden repertoire.” These memorable works were composed during the golden age of the piano – a period extending from the 19^th century to the beginning of the 20^th century during which composing and piano performance achieved great heights. We’ll focus on three composers in this series combining lecture and piano performance.

Weeks 1 & 2:  Schubert, known as the first great Romantic composer, created “character” pieces.  His work was praised by Franz Liszt for innovative composition and pianistic technique.

Weeks 3&4:  Johannes Brahms was introduced into Clara and Robert Schumann’s family when he was only 21 years old. Learning from the great masters of the past he forged his own robust and passionate musical style.

Weeks 5&6:  Claude Debussy became a truly innovative and even a revolutionary composer whose compositional technique evolved from the purely tonal traditional language of the 19^th century into a blend of various modernistic devices, including musical dissonance, overtones and harmonics. Debussy began “painting” soundscapes, anticipating the contemporary approach to composition.
